Duke University is a private research university in Durham, North Carolina. It was founded in 1838 by Methodists and Quakers in the city of Trinity. The school was renamed Duke University in 1892. Founded in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke, a tobacco and electric power industrialist. The institution changed its name to honor his late father, Washington Duke. Duke University is spread over 8600 acres. Designed by an African American architect who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School. The university opened two schools simultaneously in Asia. Duke NUS Medical School in Singapore was established in 2005 followed by Duke Kunshan University in Kunshan, China in 2013.
